“I like the possibilities of the phrase, Good Evening Wild Goose. It's cordial and charming, and indirectly references “wild goose chase.” I like the shape and rhythm of seeing it and reading it, and so I use painting as a way to justify simple pleasure like that. I don’t have any opinion about what it means if it has the right attitude.”

The 11th procession painting series, That Makes It Tough, takes aim at Buddy Holly and his tragic relationship with northern Iowa. It is available to view here. Below is the press release:

PRESS RELEASE:
On February 28th, Iowa-based artist, Tim Wirth, released “That Makes It Tough” a series of four paintings that take a fresh perspective on rock and roll icon Buddy Holly and his tragic death in North Iowa fifty winters ago.

“Having grown up in northern Iowa, Buddy Holly always seemed to be a figurine of the landscape, an odd and exciting presence, who in my mind as a child, was no different than the World’s Largest Bullhead at Crystal Lake or the Jolly Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minnesota. But the iconic eyeglasses and generic 50’s nostalgia consistently dilute him and I wanted to find images more suitable towards his connection to the region and that could also embody the simple innovation that he is so appropriately admired for.” Wirth explained.

The series of four paintings combine imagery and text in a manner that is both straightforward and elusive. For instance, one painting features a large pineapple on a black gritty surface, a reference to the tropical décor and wallpaper found inside the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Buddy Holly unknowingly played his final show on February 2nd, 1959.

“My work doesn’t tell you anything you don’t already know. I’m interested in images and information that are already there. The things that are most obvious and immediate tend to be the same things that get neglected or dismissed.”

That'll Be The Day

In the painting That'll Be The Day, the iconic rattlesnake image of the Gadsden Flag is used. The actual flag, as you may well know, reads "Don't Tread On Me". Instead of making a replica of that flag, the painting uses a phrase first made famous by John Wayne's vengeful character in the 1956 movie "The Searchers". It's a phrase that was then burned in to our national DNA by Buddy Holly, who having enjoyed the movie, honored it by writing the musical gem, "That'll Be The Day". John Wayne's real name was Marion Robert Morrison and he was born in Iowa. Buddy Holly's real name was Charles Hardin Holley and he died in Iowa.

Like an ordinary flag, there's nothing arbitrary about its form, it knows what it is and contains only what it needs to. It is the resolution between tombstone and tumbleweed.

Tim's next "procession painting" installment is titled, That Makes It Tough. The series will reference Buddy Holly and the legendary Surf Ballroom. This February marks the 50th anniversary of Buddy's final performance and tragic death in Clear Lake, Iowa.

From the thrilling Buddy Holly apartment tapes, here's a version of Slippin' & Slidin' that Buddy stretches out like taffy. It's one of the finest examples of the simple innovation that defined so many of his recordings.

"Hello Pilgrim" comes to a close

On Dec. 9th, Hello Pilgrim, a solo-exhibition of paintings from Tim Wirth held at Waldorf College, officially came to a close.

"I'd like to thank everyone who was able to attend and to the generous individuals who assisted with the installation and organization of the exhibit" Wirth stated.

In January I'm going to start painting pictures of vehicles. I expect to do them in profile and empty of any passengers. I look forward to painting any make or model. Anything with wheels in any condition.

My intention with Wirth Motor Co. is to build a body of work, a fleet of vehicles, and see what that looks like. We ought to look at paintings more like used cars instead of pictures. They are physical objects that allude to ideas of realities, histories, and lives.

Wirth Motor Co. will begin taking submissions in January. There will be no obligation to purchase the work I make, but each individual who submits a vehicle will get the chance to own that painting if they wish.

Hello Pilgrim - Waldorf College

The Pistol Pete Paintings

On Easter Sunday The Pistol Pete Paintings will be made available to view at http://www.timwirth.com/. The series is the first installment of what will be officially referred to as "procession painting", an ongoing investigation that will take the shape of series of works released every calendar month. The subject for the next series is currently unannounced and will be released in May.

The Pistol Pete Paintings have something and nothing to do with basketball legend Pete Maravich. There will be no statement about the work aside from this link of a particular 1988 ESPN obituary:
